The 125-character rule: five captions, rewritten.

On Instagram, a caption is cut off after about 125 characters, followed by “more”. For most people scrolling, that first line is the whole caption. Yet it’s the line most often spent on “Hi everyone!” or “So excited to share”.

The rule is simple: put the reason to care in the first 125 characters. Here are five captions, rewritten.

1. The product launch

BeforeSo excited to share something we’ve been working on for months!! ✨ Our new serum is finally here…
AfterBrighter skin in 14 days, without the sting. Our new serum is here, made for sensitive skin.

Lead with the result the customer gets. The launch is your news; the result is theirs.

2. The behind-the-scenes post

BeforeHi lovelies! Happy Monday 💕 Just wanted to pop on and show you a little bit of what we’ve been…
AfterIt takes 11 hours to make one of our candles. Here’s where the time goes.

A specific number creates curiosity that a greeting can’t.

3. The event

BeforeWe’re so grateful to everyone who came along last night, it was such an amazing evening and…
After120 people, one rooftop, zero leftover pastries. Next date is 14 June: link in bio.

Thank-you posts work better when they tell people what they missed and how not to miss it again.

4. The tip

BeforeA lot of people ask us about how to look after linen, so we thought we’d put together some…
AfterStop ironing your linen. Do this instead (it takes 30 seconds).

Open with the advice itself. “A lot of people ask” delays the answer they came for.

5. The offer

BeforeDon’t forget!!! Our sale is still on, there are lots of lovely things in it and it would be…
AfterLast day: 30% off everything in the studio until midnight. The linen sets are almost gone.

Put the deadline and the number in the first line. Urgency only works if it’s seen.

A quick check before you post

  • Cover everything after the first 125 characters. Does the remaining line still make someone want to tap “more”?
  • Is there a number, a result or a specific detail in it?
  • Would it make sense to someone who doesn’t follow you yet?
