The post: a 21-second reel from a small coffee roaster. Slow pan across the counter, warm light, a pour-over in the middle, a caption made of five hashtags. Lovely to look at. In the first two seconds, about half of viewers left.
Here’s why, and what we’d change.
1. The first frame doesn’t show anything happening
The reel opens on an empty counter while the camera drifts right. Nothing moves in the frame, so there’s nothing to make a thumb stop. People decide whether to keep watching in roughly the first second, and this second is spent on a setting, not an action.
2. There’s no text on screen
Most people watch reels with the sound off. Without a line of text, a viewer has no idea what this video is about or why it’s worth the next twenty seconds. The voiceover, however good, never gets heard.
3. The caption is only hashtags
morning ritual ☕️ #coffee #fyp #coffeetok #latteart #morning
A caption is a second chance to give people a reason to watch, save or follow. Hashtags alone don’t do that, and generic ones like #fyp don’t help the right people find you.
The new structure, in eight seconds
- 0:00 Coffee hits the cup, text on screen: “The 90-second pour-over we serve every morning.”
- 0:02 The pour, slow, close up.
- 0:05 The bag of beans in hand.
- 0:07 End card: “Beans: link in bio.”
Shorter, clearer and built around the one shot people want to see. The atmosphere is still there; it just doesn’t come first.
